Shaun’s buzzing over his return to Hornets

- By TOM BRAMWELL

ROCHDALE have continued to shape their squad for the 2020 Betfred League 1 season with the re-signing of Shaun Ainscough.

The former Bradford and Batley winger came through the academy system at Wigan Warriors and joined Hornets ahead of the 2019 campaign, during which he crossed for nine tries in 26 appearances.

“I am happy to have re-signed with Rochdale and build again with Matt as coach,” said the 30-year-old.

“Coming from a professional rugby background, he knows what is needed to build the team back up and hopefully compete and give the fans some great battles with other teams throughout the year.

“After a tough season, this year it is only right I go another year and give 100 per cent every week for the fans, the team and family.”

Hornets boss Matt Calland was delighted to retain Ainscough, who has signed a new one-year deal at the Crown Oil Arena.

“He was our best outside back last season,” said Calland. “He played consistently well in a beaten team each week and that says a lot about him.

“He is great to have around the club, he is a fans’ favourite and certainly knows where the try line is.”

The news follows quickly on the back of a new deal for Seta Tala and the arrival Ben Calland younger brother of coach Matt - from Oldham Roughyeds.

“I’m really happy to get the opportunity to play for a side coached by my brother,” he said.

“It’s something we had always spoken about, but not something I thought that would come to fruition. I just want to enjoy what I’m doing.”
