Cou­ple flee as fire rips through home

A MAN and a woman were forced to flee for their lives af­ter a fire ripped through their home.

The first floor of the pair’s home was de­stroyed dur­ing the blaze which broke out shortly be­fore 6am yes­ter­day.

The blaze broke out in an up­stairs front bed­room at the prop­erty in Sad­dle­back Road, Wigan, be­fore tear­ing through the rest of the prop­erty.

The cou­ple, aged in their 40s, man­aged to es­cape be­fore firefighte­rs ar­rived min­utes later.

The pair were taken to hospi­tal to be treated for smoke in­hala­tion.

Crews man­aged to douse the flames, but the up­stairs of the home was gut­ted.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

A spokesper­son for Greater Manch­ester Fire and Res­cue Ser­vice said: “It was a fire in­volv­ing the bed­room of a de­tached house. Crew used two hose reels and fire breath­ing ap­pa­ra­tus.”
