£175m water park decision in the pipeline

- By ALICE RICHARDSON Local Democracy Service

THE future of £175 million proposals for an indoor tropical water park and spa will be decided next year.

A spokesman for Trafford council confirmed the massive plans from Therme Manchester and developers Peel L&P will be looked at in detail by the authority’s planning committee in March 2020.

Plans for the 28-acre resort show it would combine water slides and wave pools with relaxing luxury spa experiences to create ‘a true oasis in the city.’

Therme Manchester first announced the proposals in July this year and said they want to bring together ‘the tradition of the ancient Roman spa with an indoor tropical paradise’ if their proposed scheme is given the go ahead.

The attraction would sit in Trafford City on Barton Dock Road between Phoenix Way, Mercury Way and the Bridgewater Canal – a site currently home to Soccerdome.

Trafford council’s planning meeting in March will determine whether or not the monster plans are granted planning permission.

Building work would be expected to begin shortly afterwards, if the committee grants full planning permission. Members of the public were invited to attend a consultation on the proposed resort in July.

When announcing the plans Stelian Iacob, CEO of Therme Group UK, said: “Therme combines sustainable technology with nature and culture to benefit communities around the world.

“Manchester has always been a forward-thinking city, and we are excited about the possibility of Therme Manchester bringing well-being and affordable luxury to the heart of the community, shaping a city of the future.”

Developers hope to transform the site into a new EventCity with car parking, as well as building a new eight-pitch football facility.

James Whittaker, Peel L&P Group development director, added: “Bringing Therme Manchester to Trafford City is a once in a generation opportunity and these plans will deliver a world class well-being resort to the north of England, create a state-of-theart events and conference facility as well as provide a permanent football facility for the local community.”
