FOOD UNWRAPPED: CRACKING CHRISTMAS GUIDE

CHANNEL 4, 8PM

OVER-EATING, over-spending, stressing over all the cooking – sounds like Christmas! But not if we turn to the Food Unwrapped gang for some tips to help speed things up, make life easier and save some cash.

The usual team of Jimmy Doherty, Kate Quilton, Matt Tebbutt and Helen Lawal are welcoming three new members into the Christmas Hideaway this year, in the guise of TV presenter and healthy food guru Amanda Byram, chef Andi Oliver and Bake Off star Briony May Williams.

They’ll be testing new and rather crazy ways of cooking the turkey, as well as finding out if it’s worth spending more for a premium bird.

They’re discovering if we actually do need to peel all those Christmas veg, learning what makes champagne so expensive and if there’s a homemade hack to do it cheaper, and testing if digestif drinks really do work when we’ve overdone it with the dinner.

MY GRANDPARENTS’ WAR: CAREY MULLIGAN

CHANNEL 4, 9PM

THE final episode in this ‘Who Do You Think Your Grandparents Were in the War’ series features actor Carey Mulligan, and her rather remarkable granddad Denzil Booth.

A bright teenager from the Welsh Valleys, he went to university at just 17, then two years later was conscripted into the Royal Navy, where his training led to him working with radar on the HMS Indefatigable.

The ship sailed to the Far East to help fight the Japanese, and in April 1945 came under attack from Japan’s brand new terror weapon – the Kamikaze.

Two of Den’s closest friends were killed and, as Carey hears, the suicide plane exploded just a few feet from where he was working.

Den later found himself witnessing history, as his ship sailed into Tokyo Bay as the Japanese surrendered, ending the war.

But he would also have seen first hand the devastation and carnage caused by the atomic bombs.
