Christmas lights are shining in Harpurhey
YOUR correspondent Paul Redmire says there are no Christmas lights on Moston Lane and Rochdale Road because I have spent the money in the city centre (Viewpoints, December 12).
I am baffled by this as Harpurhey and Moston councillors switched the lights on in both locations. Councillor Santa Claus (Pat Karney)
Lessons not yet learned
HAS Labour not learned anything?
The new leader cannot be an associate of Corbyn or anti-Brexit. Therefore, Sir Keir Starmer, Rebecca Long-Bailey and Yvette Cooper cannot be considered, let alone elected as leader.
Sir Keir Starmer says Labour should not abandon the policies they proposed in 2015, as if we can wipe out the last three years from our minds.
As for Rebecca Long-Bailey, I cannot understand how someone so inexperienced rose to prominence as Corbyn’s sidekick. As she obviously has the same beliefs as the fallen leader, she should go to the back benches. Jack Haynes, Swinton
Council glad Labour lost?
IT might seem an odd reaction, but I should imagine the city council was pleased with the election result.
After all, it can lay all its problems at the Government’s door.
If Labour had won, it would have had to show a measure of accountability; a word it hardly seems to know the meaning of. Sage, Beswick
An act of kindness
I READ of a five-year-old child in Dundee who spent her £94 birthday money on shopping for a foodbank.
It’s good to hear of kindness for the needy starting at a young age.
It’s what the world needs. M Smith, Middleton
Take pain out of Christmas
FOR many, Christmas can be a celebration full of togetherness, love and presents.
A lot of people look forward to the Christmas table, but forget that the turkey, pigs in blankets and dairy in the desserts, came from living beings who also valued their lives, families and friends. As we are celebrating in fellowship with each other, and are happy to be together with our family and friends, there are several billion animals whom are experiencing a completely different reality.
There is no significant difference between a pig, or a dog, or a fish, they are all intelligent animals, which run away from pain and want to avoid death and stress. Yet we are confining them to filthy factories.
They are gassed with carbon dioxide gas to make them unconscious, which causes them horrendous suffering and stress. This is animal abuse.
Animals are being reduced to a piece of meat and people are turning a blind eye.
We don’t need to inflict this horrendous suffering on the animals, we can easily live and be healthy on a well-balanced vegan diet, without causing the animals this stress, suffering and death.
We can change our habits, we can host a vegan Christmas and let this be the start and commitment to a vegan life. We can easily get all the nutrition we need and enjoy a wide variety of delicious dishes.
For recipes, nutritional information and advice, I recommend you to read the free vegan guide on the website Go Vegan World, as well as signing up to vegan Challenge 22, and watching vegan documentary Land of Hope and Glory; Cowspiracy and Game Changers. Anders Branderud, via email
