Mahrez is better late than never, says Mendy

BENJAMIN Mendy and Riyad Mahrez are team-mates at City, but they go back all the way to when they were youngsters coming through at Le Havre almost a decade ago.

Mendy remembers well the moment he first came across

Mahrez, not least because the Algerian turned up for training when it had already finished.

“The first time I met Riyad we had just finished the training session for Le Havre,” he said. “One guy [Riyad] comes in late because he’d missed his train. It was like two hours late. All the people were stretching, and this skinny boy arrives. The manager says ‘go and run’ and he races around the field. Everyone says ‘what are you doing? Why do you run so fast like that?’ He said, ‘I was late, and I am not here for fun, I am here to be serious.’ Then we see him on the pitch and its score, score, score, score. He’s a good guy.”

The two have been reunited at the Etihad and will both be looking to start against Wolves on Friday night as the Blues look to close the gap on leaders Liverpool.
