THIEVES unwittingly led police to a Mercedes on false plates – after parking a nicked Kia next to it.

The Kia C’eed estate was discovered in a car park in Salford on Boxing Day afternoon, just two hours after it had been swiped from outside a house in north Manchester.

Police say thieves broke into the property and stole keys before driving off.

Not long after, the 19-plate Kia was spotted near to Lord Street in Salford. Officers from GMP Traffic searched several alleys and car parks before finding the vehicle parked up.

While waiting for recovery, Sgt Matt Picton decided to check the other nearby vehicles.

Next to the Kia was a Mercedes with a flat rear tyre.

Checks revealed the car had reportedly driven away from several petrol stations without paying for fuel.

It was also on false plates. The Mercedes was also seized and enquiries are now underway to identify the owner.

The Kia has since been reunited with its owner.
