POLICE ‘do not believe anyone is in danger or has come to harm’ after a pram dumped in a river at a beauty spot sparked a huge emergency services response.

Divers spent about three hours searching the river at Etherow Country Park in Stockport yesterday after a walker spotted a buggy in the water.

Now police say they believe the pram and other baby equipment was dumped by car thieves

Witnesses say the grey and black pram, a child’s car seat and other baby equipment were seen strewn across the concrete steps of a weir in the River Etherow this morning.

A Greater Manchester Police spokeswoman said: “At around 11.38am today (Sunday, December 29), a walker reported to police the discovery of some property near to Etherow Country Park in Stockport.

“Emergency services attended and as a precaution the fire service searched the river.

“At this stage, officers believe that the property was deposited from a passing vehicle, which police to believe to be stolen. Officers do not believe anyone is in danger or has come to harm.”

Speaking shortly after firefighters arrived at the scene a Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: “Greater Manchester Police called us at 11.52am.

“A pram and a child’s belongings were seen at the weir, but we are not aware of anyone being reported in the water and we have not found anyone in the water.”

Matt Cooke, who lives close to the scene, was jogging through the park when the emergency services arrived.

He said: “As I left the police let me across the bridge at the weir.

“I saw them take a pram and a baby’s car seat out of the water.

“There was a diver in the weir passing it up.

“There’s two fire engines, three fire response vehicles, five ambulances and loads more vehicles in the car park.”

Eve Dugdale, who was walking in the park with family and friends, said: “We saw a pram in the water at the waterfall with all the baby paraphernalia in the water.

“Everyone was a bit shocked.”
