So buckle up, here’s what lies ahead for your favourite Coronation Street characters in the soap’s 60th anniversary year.
GARY WINDASS
The former family man became the soap’s latest supervillain over his attempts to cover up the accidental death of Rana Habeeb in his sabotage of the Underworld factory roof.
He murdered his loan shark boss Rick Neelan and according to actor Mikey North, who plays the ex-soldier, the fallout of Christmas sees him turn back to the dark side. He told RadioTimes.com: “He’s going to turn back to the dark side when something very unexpected happens - and I can’t say any more!”
DAVID AND SHONA
They’ve only just got married but sadly it appears David Platt could lose another wife in tragic circumstances. In the hospital, a doctor explains to the Platts that they’re planning to remove Shona’s breathing tube in the hope she can now breathe by herself. Nick suggests to David that he should allow Shona’s friends to visit as it could be the last time they see her. Will she defy the odds or is David about the face the ultimate heartbreak?
DANIEL AND BETHANY
The burgeoning relationship between Daniel and Bethany was never going to be filed away after Sinead’s death, was it?
Before Sinead passed away, she saw the writing was on the wall and faced up to the obvious attraction between the pair. In 2020 we’re set to see the next chapter in their story as young dad Daniel faces life as a widower.
Daniel takes baby Bertie for his jabs, but after the first one his son screams the place down. When Bethany calls at Daniel’s flat and he explains how he couldn’t bear to put him through the rest, she’s the one to assure him that Bertie is fine.
JADE AND FIZ
Sinister Jade made her mysterious entrance in Fiz and Tyrone’s lives as a nanny and tutor when Fiz arrived back from Birmingham with unruly daughter Hope.
As she was told her services were no longer needed, she was unmasked to viewers as the daughter of Fiz’s killer late husband John Stape – and her evil plan knocks the Stape and Dobbs family for six in the new year. After Hope breaks her arm they’re visited by a social worker who reveals that doctors have raised concerns. Fiz, Tyrone and Evelyn are quizzed about her injuries. They’re stunned to be told that their version of events doesn’t match Hope’s – and they’re devastated when the social worker tells the couple she has no choice but to take Hope and Tyrone’s daughter Ruby into foster care.
MICHAEL AND GRACE
New character Michael Bailey’s attempt to get to know his secret daughter Tianna with ex-partner Grace will also take centre stage in the new year.
The storyline explores the issue of co-parenting, getting on with your ex and putting differences aside.
Maria and Gary recently discovered that she’s pregnant with Gary’s baby and with the residents of Coronation Street reeling after finding out the truth about his work, they themselves are trying to work out the ground rules between them and whether Maria can get over what happened. But then something else happens to test their relationship.
