How fans down South pay 40% more for their season tickets on average than fans in the North
ANorth/South divide exists in football, with fans down South paying 40% more for season tickets than fans in the North. The top priced season tickets for Southern clubs in the top four divisions of English football cost an average of £670. That’s 40% more than the equivalent tickets at a Northern club - £478. Top priced tickets in the Midlands cost £502, while those in Wales average £462. The difference isn’t down to clubs in the South being more successful. The number of Northern and Southern clubs are broadly the same in each of the top four divisions. Despite this, the top priced season tickets at each club are consistently more expensive in the South than in the North. In the Premier League fans of Southern clubs pay an average of £1,136 for the top priced season tickets. In the North that drops to £748. The difference is less pronounced in the Championship with the Southern average standing at £569 compared to the Northern £511. In League One it’s £517 versus £365, while in League Two it’s £440 vs £348. London clubs, as might well be expected, have the most expensive tickets. Arsenal’s most expensive season ticket costs £2,013 - more than any other in the country. That’s three times the Southern average and 3.6 times the national average of £562. Tottenham fans don’t fare much better with their top season ticket costing £1,995. Chelsea’s, meanwhile, costs £1,250 while West Ham’s costs £1,200. Manchester’s two clubs have the most expensive season tickets in the North at £950 each. Norwich have the next most costly ticket (£907.50) followed by Liverpool (£869), Southampton (£855) and Brighton (£845).
