Tim is keeping his options open on his return

- By RICHARD FAY

TIMOTHY Fosu-Mensah has hinted he could return to United action as a left-back or defensive midfielder following his long injury lay-off.

The 22-year-old has not featured in senior football since his loan spell at Fulham last season was cut short by a serious knee injury.

Fosu-Mensah has returned to light training and is working towards a return in the coming weeks as he looks to revive his promising career.

The Dutch youngster arrived at United as a defensive midfielder but much of his game time for the Reds has come in defence.

However, ahead of his long-awaited return, Fosu-Mensah admitted a return to midfield could be on the cards.

“I can play across the back four or even sitting in midfield, but it’s always good to have competition,” Fosu-Mensah said.

“That’s football - it’s one of the biggest, if not the biggest, clubs in the world so you expect competition in the team. I love this club. I came here when I was a kid and they took very good care of me and made me a professional player. It’s wonderful to play for this club. I don’t want this to stop. I’m definitely excited for the future - I think it looks very bright.”

Having been out of action for so long, Fosu-Mensah acknowledges he will have to be eased back into things.

He added: “I do like to watch football, though, and like to see our team and go to every game at the stadium to support the lads.

“I think I might need one or two appearances to get my fitness back in the Under-23s after being out for so long. That would help me.”
