Dumped on! Fly-tip ordeal of residents

- By MARI ECCLES Local Democracy Reporting Service

RESIDENTS are being plagued by fly-tippers which have brought vermain and piles of rubbish to their street.

People living in Eva Street, Rusholme, say they are still being hit by illegally dumped waste despite previous efforts to stop it happening.

Photos sent to the Manchester Evening News show bin bags piled up in an alley, a dead mouse, cans of cooking oil and rotting food. Council bosses say they share the residents’ anger at the ‘selfish minority’ of people who dump waste in the street.

The town hall says they’ve taken enforcement action against several businesses in the area, but recognise there’s more to do.

Frustrated residents say they feel ‘defeated.’

One said: “Around about 10 years ago it started getting bad.

“It started deteriorating about seven years ago.

“The past five years have been horrendous.”

An angry resident said: “There’s huge rat holes down the back of the alleys.

“The longer you leave it, the more the rats breed.

“It’s a constant battle. We’re all furious.”

Another person said: “I’ve lived on this street for years and all I’ve known is rubbish and rats.

“I’ve lived here nearly 19 years and all the filth is from other people.

“Rats come out - I had one walking along next to be the other day.”

A council spokesman said bosses have taken enforcement action against businesses, but say that more needs to be done.

Town hall bosses said that the most recent incident - several black bin bags branded ‘NHS property’ full of meat, which had been dumped in a nearby street - were cleared as soon as possible.

But one resident said: “I feel defeated.

“You just think ‘what is the point?’ You can’t fight it.”
