Gerrard: I played for United in trial game

- By JOSH CHALLIES

LIVERPOOL legend Steven Gerrard has revealed he once went on trial for United, wearing the club’s colours in a match playing alongside Wes Brown.

The former midfielder spent the majority of his career on Merseyside, playing 710 matches, and winning numerous honours throughout his time at Liverpool.

However, the course of his career could have been far different as he underwent a period with trials for numerous clubs – including United.

“It was strange, really, because I had a lot of letters come in at the time to go and try different place. Everton, United, Palace, West Ham – to name a few,” he said. “And I think my dad was maybe trying to push Liverpool in a roundabout way.

“[Head of the youth academy] Steve Heighway said: ‘If he wants to go and try those places, no problem.’ I think Liverpool knew I was always going to stay there and Steve probably had lots of dads pushing him.

“I just went and tried them because I wasn’t signed up with any of them. I was on a one-year rolling contract at the time. I wanted to know what West Ham was like, I wanted to know what Everton and United were like compared to where I was. But I always knew I was going to stay at Liverpool long-term.”

Gerrard went on to add that he wore a United strip for his trial, describing the club’s away kit from 1992 to 1994: “We wore the green and yellow kit that was split in half, the Sharp one.

“I played in a game for them. Wes Brown was centre-back. I tried them all (different teams’ kits)!”
