Latics offer a no-brainer, says Carl

- FOOTBALL By DAVE CROWTHER-GREEN

NEW Oldham signing Carl Piergianni says he can’t wait to get going with his new side after joining the club earlier this week.

The new Latics centre-half has signed on loan for the rest of the season from rivals Salford City, where he’d made over 100 appearances in the past two-and-a-half seasons.

After being an ever-present in the club’s first 11 League Two games this season, recent opportunities with the Ammies have been limited and the 27-year-old admits that the chance of playing regular football at Boundary Park was something that he couldn’t turn down.

He said: “I played a fair few Football League games earlier in the season but when the opportunity comes for me to play games at a club like Oldham, it’s a no brainer for me.

“To come to a club like this with such rich history and great support was a no brainer and hopefully I can come here, play some games and drive the club to where it needs to be.”

Piergianni will provide much-needed back-up to a depleted Oldham defence after recent injuries to both Tomas Egert and

Jamie Stott, as well as a hard-working mentality, something which head coach Dino Maamria admitted his squad has been lacking in recent weeks.

“We’ve had a few conversations and I think more than anything he (Maamria) wants characters and I think I can help drive that,” added Piergianni. “I can help drive a good culture around the club and drive that hardworking attitude.

“I’m looking forward to building a relationship with the fans and really driving it on through hard work and good performances on the pitch.”

And after joining up with his new teammates in training earlier this week, the defender is set to make his debut against Macclesfield tomorrow.
