Man charged with at­tempted rape on canal

A MAN has been charged with at­tempted rape af­ter a woman was as­saulted along the Rochdale canal.

Po­lice were called to re­ports of an as­sault on a path near to the Bluepits Mill in Castle­ton at around 6.20pm on Mon­day, Jan­uary 6.

The vic­tim, a woman in her 50s, was walk­ing her dog along the canal when she was as­saulted by a man armed with a knife.

Now a man has been charged in con­nec­tion with the case.

Stephen David Hastie, 32, of no fixed ad­dress, has been charged with at­tempted rape, rob­bery, sec­tion 20 as­sault and pos­ses­sion of a bladed ar­ti­cle in a pub­lic place.

He has been re­manded in cus­tody.

He is due to ap­pear at Manch­ester and Sal­ford Mag­is­trates’ Court to­day.

In a state­ment, a GMP spokesper­son said: “A man has been charged af­ter a woman was as­saulted along the canal in Rochdale.

“A woman in her 50s was as­saulted by a man armed with a knife whilst walk­ing her dog along the canal.”
