THE closure move has been criticised by councillors as ‘shortsighted’.

A petition entitled ‘Stop the closure of Newall Green High School’ has already been signed by more than 300 people.

A Facebook group set up by parents has more than 500 members.

Toni Bryson wrote on Facebook: “The kids were told before I knew.”

Natalie Bryson said: “I am really worried about my daughter in year 9. This is really going to set her back.”

Rachel Heap said: “This is going to be horrendous for all staff and pupils - and even more traumatising for children with special educational needs.”

Coun Tracey Rawlins told the M.E.N: “We are shocked to hear this news and are absolutely opposed to this.”
