Fred plans 115 more flats for ‘Salchester’

BILLIONAIRE Fred Done’s property firm Salboy has revealed plans for 115 apartments in Greengate.

Planning documents sent to Salford council show new plans for the 18-storey block of flats, just off Trinity Way. The company says it wants the new building to act as a ‘catalyst’ for the area which will help to make Queen Street become a ‘destination’ for locals and people further afield.

Made up of a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments, the building will offer residents ‘views of the city’ through its communal roof terrace, according to planning documents.

But there’s no mention of affordable housing within the plans, which have just been published on Salford’s planning portal.

The company says its vision is for a building that ‘meets the ground, touches the sky and turns a corner.’ The site itself sits within the city’s Greengate ‘regeneration’ zone. The medieval heart of the city, the area is now in the midst of swathes of development – dubbed ‘Salchester’ as the district competes with its neighbour across the Irwell for vast skyscrapers.

The landmark building that kicked off the construction boom in the area is 100 Greengate. Now known as the Anaconda Cut, it scales 44 storeys and is currently the tallest building in the city. Development giant Renaker is also planning a trio of towers in the quarter, while images were revealed last year by developers One Heritage of a 55-storey skyscraper in Greengate – set to be the city’s tallest and the second highest in Greater Manchester. Salboy has just overseen the construction of its own Greengatebased complex, Local Blackfriars, a gated community made up of 380 flats, while its plans for 400 homes at Local Crescent is expected to be completed this year.
