United given Eds up on Cavani move

- By DOMINIC BOOTH

UNITED will be offered the chance to sign Paris Saint-Germain forward Edinson Cavani for free in the summer – but have been told he’s not available this month.

Having missed out on the signing of Erling Haaland, who moved from RB Salzburg to Borussia Dortmund at the start of the January window, United still want a striking addition.

They have, however, prioritised midfield acquisitions due to key injuries to Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay.

Negotiations are still ongoing for Sporting Lisbon playmaker Bruno Fernandes, while M.E.N. Sport recently reported Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s interest in a midfield loan signing, with Marcos Llorente a possible short-term arrival to cover for injuries.

United considered 33-year-old Mario Mandzukic as a replacement for Romelu Lukaku in the summer, while Cavani, 32, has also been offered to United as the club ponder a move to bolster their striking ranks.

But M.E.N. Sport understand that Cavani won’t leave PSG in the January transfer window as the French capital club value the player at £30m.

The Uruguay striker is not expected to sign a new deal at the Parc des Princes, however, and will therefore leave at the end of the season.

Sources close to the striker have told M.E.N. Sport that a United move is a ‘possibility’ in the summer, with Chelsea and Atletico Madrid also cited as interested parties, but there is nothing from club sources to indicate whether United would take up the offer to sign him.
