A DOCTOR celebrated the 100th birthday of one of her patients in true style by holding a party full of cake and celebrations.

The Wilmslow Road Medical Centre in Rusholme turned into a party venue to celebrate Jan Mahi’s big day with members of her family and the local community.

Jan said: “It’s nice to see so many people here celebrating with me. I am very happy to be celebrating my happiness.”

The medical centre opened in 1990 by Dr Pathak, who has run the service ever since.

She said: “Jan has been with me for 35 years and she has been a very nice patient.

“We got on very well because I was able to speak in her language. I was very lucky to be able to communicate with her.

“We thought we should make a little bit of fuss and that’s why we decided to celebrate her birthday.”

Jan, who speaks Punjabi, said one of the things she admires about the doctor is how much respect she has for her patients.

Jan said: “She’s very good at what she does. She cares for and respects her patients a lot.”

Dr Pathak was awarded an MBE in 2001 for her contributions to the community and her work in health care.

Practice manager Rubina Hussain added that Dr Pathak had opened lots of doors for other women in health care and is a great inspiration to be around.

“She’s done a lot of good work in the area,” said Rubina.

“She single-handedly opened this medical centre and has shown us all how much of a difference you can make when you go the extra mile with the patients.

“Our staff can speak 11 different languages.

“We give extra special attention to all our patients whether it’s end-of-life treatment, health assessments or cancer screenings.”

Family members, staff and councillor Rabnawaz Akbar joined Jan to celebrate.

Jan, from Longsight, is believed to be the oldest patient at the practice.

When asked what the secret to a long and happy life was, Jan said it was all about being surrounded by family and loved ones.

“I am very well looked after. I have a very good support network and a great doctor.”
