Day Tyson told his wife ‘I’m not coming back’

-

TYSON Fury has been very honest in recent years about his battle with depression that led him to consider taking his own life.

And in a new three-part documentary, fans of the heavyweight boxer get an insight into his life as he prepares for one of the biggest fights of the year, his rematch with Deontay Wilder.

Tyson Fury: The Gypsy King, which airs on Thursdays at 9pm on ITV, includes interviews with the sportsman’s wife, Paris.

She and Tyson have been together since they were teenagers and the couple have five children together.

In the programme, Paris recalls the terrifying moment Tyson told her that he was ‘not coming back’ before getting in his car and leaving as he struggled with his mental health.

“I remember when he got in the Ferrari before he left he said: ‘I’m not coming back’,” Paris said. “Then as the day progressed and his phone was off I started calling his dad.

“I said, ‘Have you heard from him because I don’t know where he’s at? I am worried, he was talking silly this morning.’”

Speaking on This Morning at the end of last year Wythenshawe-born Tyson said over the years he bottled up all of his mental health troubles to reach his goal and it was on the night he become World Champion that he came ‘crashing down’.

Following his win, the sportsman walked away from boxing and there was one particular moment where he got in his car and began to drive with the intent of taking his own life.

“I was at a point where I really didn’t want to live anymore and I really didn’t care about anything or anybody,” Tyson explained.

“Even the things I hold so close to me and the things that I adhere to in my life didn’t mean anything anymore. I lost the passion to breathe fresh air and want to live.”

He continued: “I was in that car that day and that was the day I made up my mind - I had thought about it before and it was well planned - I was going to smash my car into this bridge on the motorway and I thought, this is it.”

In a split second, Tyson said that he “heard the voice” of his children and his wife telling him not to do it and that stopped him from what could have been a devastating moment.

It was from this ordeal that led him to seeking professional help, describing it as “the best thing he ever did”.
