‘Ammies need to rectify mistakes’

- By CHARLIE GREGORY

GRAHAM Alexander has praised the support from Salford City’s fans, as he looks to rectify their mistakes ahead of the trip to bottom-spot Stevenage this afternoon.

Despite dominating their last two outings, the Ammies picked up a solitary point from their home ties versus Crawley Town and Plymouth Argyle, as their chances of securing a play-off place were handed a setback.

Their failure to capitalise on their supremacy in both fixtures has seen Alexander’s side slip to 11th and fall to 10 points behind seventh-placed Cheltenham Town, but the Scotsman paid tribute to the supporters for their understanding.

He said: “They have been fantastic, you see the appreciation they’ve got for the team because they know what the players have put into both these two home games.

“You can create half as much as we have done and win both games.

“In some parts, I would say that in our wins we have created a lot less. You don’t want to go backwards and start creating less to score, so we’ve got to keep doing what we’re doing. If you keep playing and creating like that, you’ll score goals and we’ll win games. It’s not through a lack of effort or what we’re actually creating on the pitch, but we are a little bit wasteful with our opportunities and any mistake we make we’re harshly punished at the moment, but that’s the realities of football and we have to deal with it.”

Ex-United forward James Wilson – one of eight senior arrivals in January – scored twice off the bench to mark his debut in midweek, and Alexander says his new recruits need time to continue gelling.

He concluded: “It’s a process we have to go through; they’ve made an impact on the squad with their quality, but we have to do a lot of work on the training pitch. Their abilities as individuals are really good; it’s now about integrating them into what the rest of the squad has to offer.

“The signs that the team have shown over the last four to six weeks have been really good, but we’ve been really harshly punished when we’ve made mistakes so that’s what we’ve got to understand – we’ve got to make less mistakes.”
