RED DEVILS CENTRE REFUSES TO BLAME BROWN’S DISMISSAL FOR DEFEAT TO GIANTS
SALFORD slipped to a narrow defeat at home to Huddersfield on Friday evening, but actually produced what was probably their best performance of the season in the process.
The Red Devils went toe-to-toe with the huge Giants pack despite missing firstchoice forwards Seb Ikahihifo and Gil Dudson, but ultimately lost when Aidan Sezer slotted a 78th minute penalty against the home side’s 12 men, following Kevin Brown’s sin binning.
But centre Kris Welham refused to blame the experienced half-back’s dismissal for the defeat. “It was a tough one to take,” admitted the former Bradford Bulls man.
“I thought we had it in our hands and we let it slip ourselves with our own errors and mistakes. “Credit to Huddersfield, they rolled us a little bit in that second half.
“We had a few opportunities to score points ourselves, including a dropgoal, but it wasn’t meant to be.” Brown was shown a yellow card in the closing stages after appearing to headbutt Jordan Turner in the process of making a tackle. Tellingly, both Ian Watson and Simon Woolford admitted they felt the contact was accidental, but referee James Child reversed a penalty initially awarded to Salford and sent Brown from the field. “We win and lose as a team, so we’ll take it all together and look at it on Monday,” said Welham. “The main focus is we want to win every week.
“As much as we are disappointed and angry right now, come Monday we’ll be preparing for the Leeds game and wanting to put things right to get another win.
“We’re a team on the up. We’ve got good players and despite the result tonight, we’ve proven in the past that we can win against anyone. “We’ll work hard and put things right against Leeds back at the AJ Bell.”
