Salford dig deep for win on the road

- By CHARLIE GREGORY

A COMBATIVE Salford City side overcame testing weather conditions to win 1-0 against bottom side Stevenage, as they continued their impressive away record in League Two.

Despite the home side’s lowly standing – and no league win at Broadhall Way since October – the Ammies found themselves on the back foot and their goal – moments after the half-hour mark – came somewhat against the run of play.

Ibou Touray delivered an inchperfect cross into the area, where an advancing Brandon Thomas-Asante nodded in – the 21-year-old’s sixth goal in his past 12 appearances.

A lively Dan Kemp threatened an equaliser within five minutes of the restart when his rising shot was palmed over by Kyle Letheren, in what proved to be the only notable action of an uneventful second half that saw a resolute Salford hold out for victory.

Manager Graham Alexander said: “I thought the standout piece of quality in the game was our goal. Then the endeavour and commitment of the players was excellent to get a clean sheet on a really difficult day.

“I’m so pleased for the players because the way they played in the two previous games, they didn’t deserve the results that we got, but we’ve come down here and shown what was needed to win the game.

“The game at this stage of the season is about results. We’re delighted for the players, but we want to continue to perform as we have done in the previous games because over the course of the season that will win us points.”
