A MUM and son were hauled before a judge after a cannabis farm and drugs worth thousands of pounds were found in their home.

Leyton Jennings, 25 and Lisa Jennings, 42, were both spared jail after police found about £7,000 worth of the class B drug at the property in Salford.

Some of the drugs recovered had been stored in Smarties chocolate jars, Manchester Crown Court heard.

Leyton Jennings admitted possession with intent to supply cannabis.

He was also sentenced in relation to a police chase when he drove ‘extraordinary dangerously,’ going through five red lights and only being stopped by two stingers.

The judge, Recorder Lawrence McDonald, said it was ‘simply good luck’ that ‘no one was killed or seriously injured.’

Leyton’s mother Lisa Jennings, who admitted possession of cannabis, said she used the drug to self-medicate.

Another man, Harris Turner, 22, was also brought before the courts in relation to the drugs discovery after his fingerprints were found on bags containing cannabis.

Manchester Crown Court heard that police originally went to the Jennings home in April 2018 looking for another man.

But at the property on Culverwell Drive they found a cannabis farm in a bedroom.

There were no drugs present currently being grown, but there was cannabis there which had been bagged.

Also present was paraphernalia including scales and other items suggestive of cannabis growth.

Leyton Jennings’ barrister suggested the value of the cannabis was nearer £4,000. Hugh Barton said the cannabis farm was ‘perhaps an ambitious term to describe what is a pretty modest grow in a box room.’ He said Leyton Jennings had got into debt due to his own cannabis use.

Prosecutor Gavin Howie told that Jennings had also been involved in a chase with an unmarked police car around Salford in December last year.

He went through five red lights and reached speeds of 60mph.

Jennings, who was driving a stolen BMW, only stopped after two stingers had been deployed to damage his tyres.

In the car officers found three mobile phones and £420 in cash, which he said was ‘Christmas money.’

Jennings, of Culverwell Drive, had also been driving without a licence or insurance. He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving.

He also admitted possession with intent to supply cannabis and received a suspended sentence, including unpaid work and a curfew.

His mother Lisa Jennings, also of Culverwell Drive, received a nine month community order, including unpaid work and curfew.

Harris Turner, of Edmund Street, Salford, was sentenced to a two-year community order, also including unpaid work and a curfew, after pleading guilty to being concerned in the supply of cannabis.
