Aguero inspired to join City by ex-United ace

-

SERGIO Aguero has revealed it was former Liverpool and United striker Michael Owen that inspired him to play in the Premier League.

The striker arrived at City in 2011 and has become one of the best to ever play in England, overtaking Arsenal legend Thierry Henry as the Premier League’s top foreign goalscorer. Standing just shy of 5ft 7in, Aguero doesn’t have the typical height and strength of a forward that used to thrive in the physical English game, but he has revealed that seeing the similarly diminutive Owen do so well gave him the confidence to succeed in the Premier League himself. Owen scored the most famous goal of his career for England against Aguero’s Argentina in the 1998 World Cup, a brilliant strike which saw him race past two defenders from the halfway line before blasting into the roof of the net, and it was a goal that played a crucial role in the Argentine’s development. “When I was a kid I was looking up to Michael Owen,” Aguero said. “I’ve always said it, even in my book, I like him because he’s small, he had the No.10 just like me in my club and he played as a forward.

“So I told myself, if a small player like him is doing well in the Premier League, I could make it too.

“Imagine that I was only a kid, I was 9-10-years-old, it was in 1998, he scored this amazing goal with England, I was a kid and when I saw that goal I couldn’t believe my eyes.

“I was watching the World Cup in my neighbourhood and I was telling everyone that I loved Owen.”
