Harry urges United to be ruthless in the run-in

- By DOMINIC BOOTH

HARRY Maguire has challenged United to develop a ruthless mentality in games as he revealed their biggest obstacle to success is themselves.

The Reds captain laid out his desire to lift silverware under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as he answered supporters’ questions.

United have proven capable against the very best opposition this season – beating Chelsea three times, City twice, as well as Tottenham and Leicester. But they have lost to Crystal Palace, Burnley and Newcastle, defeats which have proven damaging in their bid to finish in the top four.

Maguire now wants more consistency from the side when football returns.

He said: “Our toughest opponent, probably, is ourselves. At times this year, as a team, we have probably let ourselves down by being a bit too inconsistent.

“There have been times when we’ve been so good in games and then we’ve come off it a bit and been punished.

“So I’d say our toughest opponent is ourselves.

“We need to be mentally strong. We are a young group but we don’t really want to use that as an excuse. We want to be young but play mature.

“That is where we have really picked up in recent weeks (before the lockdown).”

Maguire then reiterated his ambition at United is to win trophies, with Solskjaer’s side still in the FA Cup and Europa League when the season was shut down due to coronavirus.

“I have joined this club because I want to win trophies and I want to get silverware,” he added.

”When I look back on my time at Manchester United, I want to make sure I have some trophies in that cabinet.”
