YOBS ‘coughed and spat’ at police officers as they tried to break up a birthday party with 40 adults and children.

Seven people – between the ages of 23 and 48 – have been arrested after the group refused to leave the party at a house in Bolton on Saturday night.

Police were first called to Wemsley Grove in Tonge Moor at around 8pm to reports of a large group of people fighting in the street.

When police arrived, they discovered a huge birthday party with around 40 people in attendance.

Officers tried to encourage the group to disperse, but say they were ‘met with hostility’ as the guests refused to break up.

As some began to leave, one stubborn group remained and began to cough and spit at the officers ‘deliberately,’ according to Greater Manchester Police. The attack resulted in seven people being arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and for breach of COVID-19 regulations.

They were sent to ‘police detention’ and have since received fines, said officers. Another individual who was not arrested was given a fixed penalty on the spot. Greater Manchester Police bosses have slammed the yobs, saying it is ‘really disappointing to see the rules being flagrantly ignored’ and lives being put at risk as a result of their thoughtless actions. Assistant Chief Constable Robert Potts said: “When the vast majority of us are all making such sacrifices in order to reduce the transmission of the virus and save lives it is really disappointing to see the rules being flagrantly ignored by those who are putting their own safety and the safety of so many others at risk.

“Following this incident yesterday, the Bolton Neighbourhood Team will be out providing reassurance to residents in the area, so please feel free to speak to them if you have any questions or concerns.”

A police spokesman added: “Seven people – aged between 23 and 48 – were arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and for breach of COVID-19 regulations. Following a period of time in police detention they received fixed penalties. A further individual was not arrested but was given a fixed penalty at the scene.”

The news comes as groups have been spotted elsewhere in Manchester in recent days, including a gathering at Salford Quays on Friday where around 30 cars were seen ditched for a get-together on the waterfront, and dozens more were found at a park in Eccles.
