Man beaten in ‘brutal unprovoked’ attack

-

CCTV footage of a ‘brutal, unprovoked’ attack on a man in his 50s has been released by police investigating the incident.

The man was left unconscious after being punched and kicked in the head at a social club in Eccles, say police.

He had to be taken to hospital, where he remained, and required ‘extensive treatment’ for a fractured cheekbone and severe bruising to his face and body, according to officers.

Police were first called to reports of an assault at St Michael’s Social Club in Liverpool Road at around 5.56pm on Sunday, May 3.

They are now investigating the incident and have released CCTV footage of two men they would like to speak to in connection with the assault.

The CCTV footage captures the moment a man appears to get out of a car and approach a person, just off camera.

A man repeatedly throws punches and kicks until he is wrestled away by another man who looks to have arrived in the same car.

The men then appear to get back into the car and drive away.

The investigators have called the assault a ‘brutal and senseless attack’ and have appealed for anyone who may have information to contact police.

Detective Constable Stefani Matthews, of Greater Manchester Police’s Salford District, said: “This was a brutal and senseless attack which has left a man in hospital with serious injuries.

“We have released CCTV footage of two men we would like to speak to in connection with the incident and we want anyone who may have information to contact police as soon as possible.

“I ask anyone who believes they were near the social club on Liverpool Road at the time of the assault to try and think back to that evening and recall whether they recognise the car or the men in the video so we can establish the full details of the attack.”

Anyone with information can contact police on 0161 856 5351, incident number 1965 of 03/05/20.

Information can be passed on anonymously by calling the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
