Bruno always worth the risk as legend Rio backs star man

- By DOMINIC BOOTH

RIO Ferdinand believes Bruno Fernandes is such a great asset for United because he takes risks.

The former United defender has analysed Fernandes’s performances for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side since the restart and says the Norwegian won’t mind even if Fernandes gives the ball away.

The Portugal international has been a sensation since signing for United from Sporting Lisbon in the January transfer window and his impact has helped them challenge for a top-four place.

And Ferdinand believes United’s players are starting to anticipate Fernandes’s risktaking, which could bring them more success in the future.

“It’s the risks he takes on a football pitch and he’s someone you don’t mind doing that because his intentions are there,” Ferdinand said.

“When the ball comes to him, a lot of midfielders nine times out of 10 play it back or out wide, but he identifies there’s a danger area, a space for him to live and breathe and for players to attack once he gets on the ball. And these players are starting to get on the same wavelength as him when he gets the ball.

“All great players before the ball comes to them are having a look, assessing the areas around him.

“He wants to exploit the areas, playing in with one pass. The intention is there to hurt the opposition.”

Fernandes and Paul Pogba have begun to build a great relationship in the United midfield and Ferdinand’s analysis goes a way to explaining why the two work so well – because Solskjaer doesn’t mind them getting things wrong.
