United Europa path revealed

- By TYRONE MARSHALL

UNITED will play the second leg of their last-16 Europa League tie against LASK Linz at Old Trafford on Wednesday, August 5.

That tie will kick-off at 8pm with the Reds holding a 5-0 aggregate lead after the first leg in Austria, which was played in March – a day before the competition was suspended amid the coronavirus outbreak across Europe.

Once the remaining last-16 ties have been finished the quarter-finals, semi-final and final will be played in Germany in August, with games taking place over one leg rather than two.

United will face FC Copenhagen or Istanbul Basaksehir in the quarterfinal, with that match confirmed for Monday, August 10, at 8pm at Stadion Koln in Cologne.

Turkish side Basaksehir are 1-0 up going into their return leg at Copenhagen, who beat Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men in the Champions League group stage in 2006.

If United progress to the semi-final they will face either Premier League rivals Wolves, Olympiacos, Seville or Roma and the last-four tie will be played on Sunday, August 16, at 8pm, in the same stadium in Cologne.

The Europa League final will take place in Cologne on Friday, August 21, at 8pm.

If United reach the final they will face one of Inter Milan, Getafe, Rangers, Bayer Leverkusen, Shakhtar Donetsk, Wolfsburg, Basel or Eintracht Frankfurt.

That could result in a United v Inter Milan final, with the Nerazzurri having signed Romelu Lukaku and Ashley Young over the last 12 months, while they still have Alexis Sanchez on loan from Old Trafford.
