‘Superhero’ saves mum

LITTLE ISLA GETS BRAVERY AWARD FOR SAVING NURSE

- By REBECCA DAY

A PROUD mum has praised her ‘hero’ little girl for dashing to her rescue after a heavy fall.

When Suzann Harrison, a nurse from Stockport, fell from the kitchen counter onto her tiles, she screamed out in agony. The 31-yearold was in so much pain she couldn’t talk. But luckily her six-year-old daughter Isla heard her cry for help.

Suzann said: “I had just missed my footing while I was cleaning the kitchen window... I crashed down.”

The mum, who suffers from a degenerative back condition, was unable to move following the fall at their home in Offerton.

She said: “I couldn’t speak, I was just making noises, it was hurting so much. It was like someone was twisting my arm round and not letting go.” Without flinching, Isla, who goes to Banks Lane Infant School, ran in and grabbed her mum’s phone. She put it to her face so she could unlock the device with facial recognition technology. She called her dad Oliver, who works at Border Force at Manchester Airport, to come home. The youngster then dialled 999 for paramedics. Suzann said: “She was talking to the call handler, reciting our address. I wasn’t able to string a full sentence together. She got a cushion to put under my head.

“I didn’t know she knew how to ring someone like that. She loves the show Ambulance (a BBC One documentary about paramedics), it’s her favourite programme. She watches it on repeat. She was not stressed at all, she saw them put a cannula in my arm. She was just watching.”

Suzann, who works in the crisis response team at Wythenshawe Hospital, was in so much pain that she was given morphine.

She said: “They gave me gas and air, Isla was holding it for me. She disappeared upstairs, then put on her nurse’s uniform. They let her press the button for the blood pressure. She was happy to be there and was getting on with it.”

Suzann was rushed to Stepping Hill Hospital, where she was treated for a broken shoulder.

Paramedics were so impressed by Isla’s quick-thinking actions that they gave her a bravery award.

Suzann said: “I am so extremely proud of Isla, she was so brave and her so calm despite hearing mummy sob with pain. She’s my real life superhero. She was such a superstar, she took it all in her stride and I’m so very proud of her. Daddy got home and was also extremely proud.”
