Tributes to singing star

EMOTIONAL TRIBUTES PAID TO DENISE JOHNSON

TRIBUTES have been paid to Manchester singing ‘legend,’ Denise Johnson.

The news of the artist’s death broke on Twitter yesterday afternoon, with fellow stars celebratin­g her life and career.

She was famed for collaborat­ions with Scottish rock band, Primal Scream, and ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr’s group Electronic.

The vocalist was preparing to release a debut acoustic album, in September called Where Does It Go.

No further details about the singer’s death have been released.

Primal Scream’s bassist, Simone Marie, lead a series of emotional tributes to the star on Twitter.

“Very sad news. love and prayers to Denise’s family and loved ones,” she said. “Rest in Power Denise Johnson.”

Music journalist, Shell Zenner wrote: I’m absolutely heartbroke­n to hear about the passing of @TheDJohnso­nR3AL forever a legend, always wore her heart on her sleeve and was brimming over with passion. Taken way too soon.”

Born and raised in Hulme, Denise Johnson began her career performing with American soul band, Maze, during an English tour in the late 1980s.

From there, she went on to sing on Primal Scream’s hit album Screamadel­ica, with her vocals most known for the track Don’t Fight It, Feel It.

During the mid-to late 1990s, Johnson released three solo singles: “ays of the Rising Sun, I Believe and Inner Peace.

She went on provide vocals on a number of songs for Johnny Marr and Bernard Sumner’s alternativ­e dance super group, Electronic.

Johnson’s new album was due to be released on September 25.

The singer tweeted on July 18: “For those asking, my debut acoustic album Where Does It Go is now available for pre-order.

“Huge thanks to those that have got behind this, by just liking/retweeting/ commenting to pre-ordering.”

English singer, Rowetta wrote on Twitter: “Sad sad news today. I have so many great memories of Denise from when we were young.

“We just used to sing and laugh like naughty schoolgirl­s all the time. A great loss to Manchester and music. My condolence­s to her family and loved ones.”

Manchester punk band, A Certain Ratio said: “It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beautiful dear friend Denise has passed away.

“A full statement will be released later, for now please give her family and friends the space they need.”
