The fear of demotion is driving Bran on at United

- By MARCUS BANKS

BRANDON Williams believes the threat of being demoted back to United’s U-23 team keeps him motivated to stay in the firstteam.

Williams, 19, is the latest United academy graduate to make a mark in the senior side, making 34 appearances in all competitions this season.

The defender will start United’s Europa League quarterfinal clash against Copenhagen after Luke Shaw was ruled out for the remainder of the season with an ankle injury.

Williams’ impressive performances in recent months saw the youngster handed another new contract, extending his stay at Old Trafford until 2024 with the option of an extra year.

Despite his growing importance in the first-team, Williams believes he could easily be dropped from the first-team squad if he does not maintain his performance levels.

“It’s not a case of that,” he said at the pre-match press conference when asked if he knew his spot in the senior squad on the back of a particular performance this season.

“At any time, I can drop down into the U23s. I could pick up an injury or anything.

“I’m focused on what I’m doing and I’m going to keep on working hard. Keep on improving on what I need to improve on and play as many games as I can.”

When pressed on whether he honestly believes he could be demoted, Williams doubled down on his stance.

“Yeah, it’s down to myself and keeping fit. I need to be ready to play every game.

“We’ve got games coming up and it’s a one-off game tonight so we need to win.”
