Reds return to Memphis may not be a daft idea!

- By RICHARD FAY

THE wait goes on as United are yet to sign any new players in the transfer window.

Business conducted by rival clubs continues to pile on the pressure.

United are playing the long game as they look to sign Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund and remain confident they can secure a deal for their top transfer target.

But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer does have an obvious alternative if he decides to look elsewhere this summer – Memphis Depay.

The former United forward shone for Lyon in their run to the Champions League semifinals and began the new campaign in style as he netted a hat-trick on Friday night.

Since departing Old Trafford in 2017, the Dutch international has proven himself capable of carrying the burden of immense pressure at both club and international level, and he could be a wise acquisition this summer.

M.E.N. Sport reported last year Lyon had looked at possibly selling Depay if significant interest was shown, and although United aren’t believed to hold any current interest in the 26-year-old, he could be a viable alternative.

The Reds did insist on a buy-back option when he moved to Lyon, as they did with Adnan Januzaj’s Real Sociedad contract, but this summer it might become a more tempting clause to exercise.

The priority has to be pursuing a move for Sancho, but if United finally accept defeat, they have a simple solution which would avoid the stress of another transfer saga.
