Tip-off hotline to catch louts dumping rubbish

- By ALICE RICHARDSON Local Democracy Service

A HOTLINE has been launched to catch fly-tippers in the act after rates have soared during lockdown.

The level of illegal rubbish dumping has gone up massively in Trafford since March, with the council trying a number of different tactics to tackle the problem.

Last month, the authority upped the potential fine for those caught flytipping to a massive £50,000 and repeat offenders could face up to five years in jail. Now, the council is trying a different approach and has launched an anonymous tip-off hotline to try and catch fly-tippers red-handed.

Members of the public who see people dumping rubbish are being encouraged to report them directly to the hotline on 0161 912 4152.

The authority’s Environmental Improvement team will then take action against the fly-tippers who, if convicted, could face a £200 fixed penalty notice or a fine up to £50,000 and/or five years’ imprisonment.

The tip-off line will be launched on September 28 and those who call are encouraged to give as much information as possible, including descriptions of those involved, where the crime is taking place and information regarding the vehicle type and registration. member for the environment, said: Since September 1, the council “Crimes of this nature will not be tolerated has issued more than 90 fixed penalty in any part of the borough.” charges resulting in hundreds of To report dumped rubbish call pounds in fines.
