Fancy being next chief constable?
JOB ADVERT GOES LIVE LOOKING FOR ‘INSPIRATIONAL, INNOVATIVE’ LEADER
A JOB advert for the new Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police is now live.
The top role became vacant after former chief constable Ian Hopkins was forced out of his £200,000-a-year job just before Christmas.
The search for a new chief has officially begun with the job advertised on the Greater Manchester Combined Authority’s (GMCA) website.
Recruiters say they are looking for an ‘inspirational, innovative leader with a track record of delivering significant transformational change.’
The job description states: “Arguably one of the most challenging and critically important roles in policing today, you will work in partnership with others across the region and beyond, to ensure that Greater Manchester is a safe place to live and work.
“You will motivate and lead a workforce of over 10,000 and play a pivotal role in developing our organisational capability to ensure we delivery safe, high quality services.
“You will work to the Deputy Mayor for Policing, Crime and Fire and be directly accountable to the Mayor to ensure effective financial and resource management, to achieve our strategic and operational plans, and create a lasting positive impact across the region.”
The salary is not disclosed, described only as ‘competitive.’ Recruitment firm Gatenby Sanderson has been appointed to find the right person for the job. The closing date for applications is March 17, with the various interviews, panels and assessments ending on March 26.
The search for a new chief follows a series of high-profile disasters. Recently, government inspectors estimated 80,000 crimes hadn’t been recorded by GMP in one year. The force’s new computer system, Integrated Operational Policing System (iOPS), has also been dogged by problems since it was switched on at a cost of £27m in July 2019, some 19 months behind schedule.
Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) ruled the iOPS debacle had exposed hundreds of vulnerable people to ‘potential risk of harm.’
Ian Pilling, former deputy chief constable, ‘stepped up’ as the force’s chief an interim basis before Christmas.
Top cops at forces all over the country are being talked up as potential candidates.
A popular choice among many inside GMP would be Nick Adderley, who became the chief constable of Northamptonshire in 2018.
