Club legend claims Cav wants return to Uruguay

- By DAVID BYROM

NACIONAL legend Ruben Sosa has claimed Edinson Cavani wants a move to the Uruguayan club.

With the striker’s contract at United coming to an end, there has been plenty of speculation over his future.

United are understood to have been frustrated by the player’s recent injury problems, meaning there is no guarantee they will take up their option of a year’s extension to his current deal.

Meanwhile, Cavani’s father has claimed his son wants to leave United this summer and return to South America due to having not settled in England.

He has been linked with a potential move to Boca Juniors, with former United defender Marcos Rojo claiming he had reached out to Cavani over a potential move to the Argentine side.

Yet Sosa has now claimed he has spoken to Cavani over a return to his native Uruguay.

Speaking to Polideportio, Sosa said that he could see Cavani being more willing to move back to Uruguay than fellow forward Luis Suarez.

He said: “I’ve spoken with Cavani, we always send each other messages by phone.

“I’m closer to Cavani, who I think wants to come to Nacional.

“He has more desire than Suarez. Suarez wants but the family may stop him.

“Cavani, his will is to come to Nacional and he’ll be welcome.”

The 34-year-old played for Danubio after coming through the youth academy at the Uruguayan club.

Yet he quickly caught the eye and moved to Italian side Palermo in 2007 and he has spent the rest of his career in Europe.

That has not prevented speculation that Cavani may one day return to Uruguay, with the striker once revealing he grew up as a fan of Nacional due to his father and brother supporting rivals Penarol.
