Site of proposed rugby ground is now protected green space

-

LAND formerly earmarked to become home to a huge new Sale Sharks rugby stadium has been secured for community use - for at least 25 years.

Plans to build a massive new stadium and sports village on Crossford Bridge playing fields in Sale for the

Premiership side were dropped in June last year after Trafford council withdrew its support following public opposition.

Proposals included a floodlit 4G pitch, a running track, a sprint track, grass pitches, a community pavillion, a cycling and teaching hub, new walking and running routes, a cafe, community space and a children’s climbing and activity centre.

More than 2,500 people responded to the first phase of the consultation. Hundreds raised objections.

Concerns included the loss of green space, the potential for extra traffic, noise and potential pollution.

Members of sports clubs which currently use the site - including athletics club Sale Harriers, Sale United Football Club and Old Altrinchamians football club - said they were concerned.

Now Trafford council has made its commitment to keeping Crossford Bridge playing fields safe for community use even clearer.

Bosses have signed the land over through a Fields in Trust agreement permanently.

This is a binding legal commitment with the landowner (the council in this case) - which allows green spaces to be protected for current and future generations.

The decision means that Sale Sharks will not be able to use Crossford Bridge as they had still hoped.
