Richards: We wore our medals to spite United!

-

MICAH Richards has revealed how City’s squad once wore their Premier League medals on a night out to spite United.

After the Reds won the 2010/11 title, the former Blues defender was bemused at seeing the players wearing their winners’ medals on a night out, arguing it was over the top and unnecessary.

The following season saw one of the all-time great Premier League title races, with Sergio Aguero’s last-gasp goal famously sealing the title for City on goal difference.

Speaking on the Match of the Day: Top 10 podcast, Richards said: “There’s one memory that sticks out – remember that Wayne Rooney overhead kick? It’s always advertised and you see my face, just about to head it and he just comes and scores one of the best goals you’ll ever see.

“Old Trafford, for me, because I came through the academy at City, they were always arrogant, always horrible.

“Every year we were getting better and better, then the 2011/12 season, when we won 6-1 – it was the best day of my life.

“It was incredible. Rio (Ferdinand), I love him, he’s a great guy, but I remember the season before, they all went out to a night at Panacea and they all had their Premier League medals around their neck. That moment just stuck in my mind – I was thinking ‘you’re Rio Ferdinand, you’re a great player, everyone knows you’re great and you’re going to win everything, you don’t need to come in the club with your medals on’.

“It stuck in my mind and, as soon as we won the league, all the Man City boys did exactly the same.

“We went out with all our medals and we were like, f*** you.”
