Kyle and Alfie give Latics boss first win

KEITH Curle secured his first victory as Oldham head coach with a 2-1 win over Exeter City last night.

Goals from Kyle Jameson and Alfie McCalmont helped Latics to three points at Boundary Park after Jack Sparkes had pulled one back for the Grecians in the second half.

The visitors started well and had the first chance inside four minutes, as Matt Jay connected with Jake Taylor’s cross but the forward headed over the bar from close range.

They then had a similar effort midway through the half when Sparkes found Nigel Atagana free in the area but he also headed over.

And it was Latics who would open the scoring shortly after, as Jameson grabbed his first goal for the club by connecting with Nicky Adams’ corner on 35 minutes and heading into the bottom corner.

Oldham picked up where they left off after the break and doubled their lead on 55 minutes when McCalmont unleashed a fierce volley from the edge of the box which cannoned off the crossbar and over the line.

The visitors pulled a goal back just after the hour mark through Sparkes who broke free at the back post and tapped in from close range.

Goalkeeper Laurie Walker then produced a stunning double save to deny a potential equaliser moments later, firstly pushing the ball onto the post before reacting first to the rebound.

The visitors continued to push for an equaliser late on and were almost level with 12 minutes left to play, as Jay struck low towards goal but Walker was there to save.
