Greenwood injury scare for reds

- By TYRONE MARSHALL

UNITED are hopeful the injury that has forced Mason Greenwood out of the England Under-21 squad is not too serious.

The Young Lions departed for Slovenia yesterday afternoon to play three games in the group stages of the European Under-21 Championships, but the Reds forward didn’t travel.

With the Under-21s playing three group games in seven days between tomorrow and next Wednesday, the decision has been taken not to risk Greenwood.

Instead, he will be assessed by United’s medical staff ahead of their return to Premier League action against Brighton at Old Trafford on Sunday, April 5.

Greenwood ended a scoring drought with the Reds’ only goal in their 3-1 defeat to Leicester City in the FA Cup quarter-final at the

King Power Stadium on Sunday.

That ended a run of just one goal in 26 games for the Reds, but his all-round performances have been praised by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recently.

“His overall game has improved so much. Too many people are too concerned about stats and look just at assists and goals,” said the Reds boss.

“His contribution to the team is way above what he was doing last season except for the goals. And they will come. I don’t worry about that at all.

“Because we see him day in, day out in training. He’s growing physically.”

United have suffered from injuries in attack recently but Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani were involved on Sunday, although Marcus Rashford has a foot injury.
