Blues set to topple even more records
CITY have raised the standard in English football under Pep Guardiola and this season could prove to be no different.
The Blues City certainly started off sluggishly, dropping 16 points in their opening 11 games as they struggled for goals and wins. However, their outstanding form between December and March has seen them win 18 of their subsequent 19 matches to put themselves in pole position for the title – and to set more records.
The first of those relates to a record they already hold, the biggest winning margin in the league. Guardiola’s Centurions achieved this in the 2017/18 campaign when they finished 19 points ahead of United, while Liverpool’s tailing off last season meant that they missed the chance to set a new standard. City are 14 points ahead of United and 15 of third-placed Leicester, although both sides have a game in hand. There is time for the Blues to extend that gap and their fixture at Leicester coming up gives them an opportunity to stretch it.
Winning at the King Power is needed if Guardiola’s side are to set a new record for consecutive away wins in the league. Chelsea and City both managed 11 in 2008 and 2017 respectively, and the current Blues outfit have five trips left to add to their total of eight.
City are unbeaten in 15 away games in all competitions since losing to Tottenham in November, and have already set an English record for consecutive away wins in all competitions. Victory over Gladbach moved them to 12 in a row to eclipse the 2017 City team and they extended their streak by winning at Everton days later.
