Woman rescued from flats blaze by neighbours

34-YEAR-OLD TAKEN TO HOSPITAL WITH ‘SEVERE’ SMOKE INHALATION

A WOMAN has been taken to hospital after being rescued by neighbours during a fire.

Emergency services were called to a blaze at a property on Cannon Walk, in Denton, at around 9.45am yesterday.

It started on the first floor of a building, a spokespers­on for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said.

A 34-year-old woman was rescued from the building by neighbours before firefighte­rs arrived.

She suffered ‘severe’ smoke inhalation and was unconsciou­s when crews arrived.

The woman was treated by paramedics and a fire service trauma technician.

An air ambulance also landed nearby.

The woman was taken to hospital for further treatment.

Investigat­ions into what started the fire are ongoing, though police said there is not believed to be any third party involvemen­t.

Forensic officers were pictured going into a block of flats on Cannon Walk.

A number of police vehicles were stationed at the scene.

In a statement, a GMFRS spokespers­on said: “At 9.45pm on April 5, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service was called to the scene of a domestic building fire on Cannon Walk, Denton.

“Four fire engines from Gorton, Ashton-under-Lyne and Hyde were dispatched to the scene where firefighte­rs conducted two searches of the building to ensure that all people were accounted for and extinguish­ed a first-floor fire.

“One woman was rescued by neighbours prior to the arrival of the fire service. She suffered severe smoke inhalation and was not conscious upon our arrival.

“She was treated by a Fire Service Trauma Technician alongside colleagues from North West Ambulance Service and the North West Air Ambulance.

“She was conveyed to hospital for further treatment.”

In a statement, a GMP spokespers­on said: “Police were called shortly before 10am on Monday 5 April 2021 to a report of a fire at a property on Cannon Walk, Denton, Tameside.

“A woman aged 34 was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

“Enquiries into the circumstan­ces of the fire are ongoing.

“It is not currently believed that there is any third party involvemen­t in the fire.”
