BRUNO Fernandes has hailed the impact of Michael Carrick at Manchester United and explained how the former midfielder is helping him to improve.

The former English midfielder is part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s coaching staff and has earned rave reviews from several United players since joining the backroom team, having spent 12 years at Old Trafford as a player.

Fernandes, who has been working closely with Carrick, has opened up on the United coach’s impact on his game.

“I think everyone knows he was a top player and he can help to improve every player here,” he told talkSPORT.

“For the midfielders, it’s easy for Michael to help and we have to understand we have a lot to learn from him because he was a top player.

“I really appreciate his qualities as a player before and now I’m happy to have him as a coach to pass his experience and help me improve as a player.”

When quizzed if jumping from third to second and lifting the Europa League would be deemed as a success this season, Fernandes insisted that winning one piece of silverware is never the aim for a club of United’s pedigree.

“No, it’s never a success when you win one trophy at this club,” Fernandes said.

“If we won four trophies, I still think we’d need to improve. If this season we just win the Europa League, we still have to improve.”

Manchester United haven’t lost away from home in the Premier League for over a calendar year and Fernandes believes it’s their form at Old Trafford that has left them chasing Manchester City.

“It’s difficult to say (how much we’ve improved) because the improvement you have to see game by game, not season by season,” he said. “Season by season you can see if you win something if the trophies come and things like that. For us, we are improving as a team, we want to win trophies, we want to win everything we’re included in. At the moment, I think we are not that level this season because we lost a lot of games.

“The home games are the games you don’t expect to lose but we’ve lost a lot of points at home. Away, our form is

really different. I don’t think we’ve lost one game away in the league. We are improving, this season isn’t finished and we have a lot to do until the end of the season. “Until it’s mathematically impossible, you have to believe we can catch City. When it’s not, I will forget the league.”
