Blues pull out of Super League just days after signing up!

- By SIMON BAJKOWSKI

CITY have begun the process to withdraw from the European Super League less than 48 hours after confirming their participation in it.

The Blues, along with neighbours United, were among 12 clubs from England, Spain and Italy that announced their intention to form a breakaway ‘super league’ on Sunday, plunging football into chaos in the process.

The proposals, which have received widespread condemnation from supporters all the way to the Royal family and everywhere in between, would change the landscape of football and make Europe’s top competition a ‘closed shop.’

However, City are back out of the Super League after facing mass backlash.

Pep Guardiola summed up the thoughts of many in his press conference yesterday when he criticised the lack of communication from the breakaway group and the closed shop that the new competition would represent.

They are not alone, with Premier League rivals Chelsea, as well as La Liga sides Atletico Madrid and Barcelona, also withdrawing from the proposals.

The remaining English clubs – United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs – followed by withdrawing late last night.

Ahead of their Premier League match with Brighton last night – a goalless draw – it was reported that Chelsea intended to pull out, amid mass protests from their own fans outside of Stamford Bridge. The Super League is on the edge of collapse less than 72 hours of its announcement to the world.
