CITY RATED

- BY SIMON BAJKOWSKI

EDERSON

Another game without a clean sheet. Slowed things down well after the red card when City needed him to.

KYLE WALKER

Showed why he is first-choice right-back with his knowhow coming to the fore. Ambitious going forward.

JOHN STONES

Started badly, caught out for the goal within 30 seconds and got worse when he was sent off before half-time.

RUBEN DIAS

Improved after a rocky start, bringing calm to the backline and showing caution to lunge in when the ball was to be won.

ALEKS ZINCHENKO

Off colour. Beaten for the goal and had Guardiola spitting feathers when he ducked to let a ball go over his head.

RODRI

A goal always helps, especially when it gets your team out of a tight spot. Filled in briefly at centre-back.

ILKAY GUNDOGAN

Touch was sharp and he helped set the tempo of crisp, flowing football that got the Blues back in control of the game.

BERNARDO

Probably couldn’t believe his luck at the space he was allowed but took full advantage with two lovely assists.

RIYAD MAHREZ

Enjoyed driving at the gaps in the Villa third left for him and continued his excellent form. A master of the glide into the box.

PHIL FODEN

Needs to play in every big game between now and the end of the season. A menace all night and an important goal.

GABRIEL JESUS

Pressed well and hard in the first half, which was missed once he was substituted in a sacrifice for Stones.

SUBSTITUTES

AYMERIC LAPORTE: (Jesus, 46) Dealt with everything that came his way to ensure a quiet second half for the defence. Stones has opened the door for him for Wembley and Paris. 7 FERNANDINHO: (Mahrez, 90)

NOT USED: Steffen, Ake, Mendy, Garcia, Cancelo, Torres, Sterling
