Ronaldo is not the issue at United, says Yorke

- By GEORGE SMITH

DWIGHT Yorke has rubbished claims that the Reds are worse off for bringing Cristiano Ronaldo back to the club.

After a blistering start to life back in the Premier League – scoring three goals in his first two appearances – United’s current run of three games without a victory has resulted in the Portugal international receiving criticism from some.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has rarely shown signs of a huge work-rate off the ball, but has delivered in key moments.

Some have claimed Ronaldo is going to cause a ‘problem’ for United in that he won’t be as hard-working out of possession.

However, Treble-winner Yorke, who spent four years at Old Trafford, believes any club in the world would be made better by Ronaldo’s presence.

“I think that is a load of nonsense, in my opinion,” Yorke said when asked if Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford was holding United back.

“You play your best players, it is as simple as that. Players know exactly what those types of players bring to the table and the other players in that team do specific things to complement the attacking players.

“For people to start saying he brings unbalance to United... yes, he probably isn’t as dynamic and whatever else, but Cristiano Ronaldo, in any team in the world, makes you a better team.

“Players should get used to that and I really think when you look at United’s attacking players and the quality that they possess, they have one of the best squads in the country and, unfortunately, at this point in time, there is a question mark as to why United are not producing the goods as they should be at this present time.”
