ASLAN the lion has arrived in the region as excitement builds for this year’s Christmas show at The Lowry.
CS Lewis’ much-loved The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe was initially set for a seven-week run here in 2020, but was cancelled amid the pandemic.
Now it’s finally happening and the 40kg puppet of one of the main characters, Aslan, has been suspended majestically in the Salford theatre’s main foyer until early 2022.
Aslan, which is made from aluminium, timber and cane and is covered in fabric and paper, is one of three versions created for the stage show and was used during the production’s run at The Bridge Theatre, London in 2019/20.
A new Aslan puppet been created for the current tour which visits The Lowry over Christmas, opening on Wednesday, December 8 and running until Saturday, January 15, 2022.
The third reincarnation of
Aslan, and what audiences can expect to see when watching the production at The Lowry this festive season, has been imagined by Toby Olie.
The show broke box office records at Leeds Playhouse in 2017 and played to packed houses and critical acclaim at the Bridge Theatre in London in 2019.
The cast includes former EastEnders actress Samantha Womack who stars as the White Witch, while Aslan is played by Chris Jared.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is produced on tour by Elliott & Harper Productions and Catherine Schreiber and based on the original Leeds Playhouse production.
It will be directed by Michael Fentiman, based on the original production by Sally Cookson with original set and costume design by Rae Smith.
