VIDEO footage has captured the moment a man was stabbed in the hand near a Tesco store.

The terrifying incident was caught on camera outside Tesco Extra on Cross Street in Hindley, Wigan.

Witnesses described seeing a fight break out between a group of people at around 8pm.

Police say a man – believed to be a security guard – was stabbed in the hand during the altercation. He was treated by paramedics at the scene and did not require hospital treatment.

A 40-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and remains in custody for questioning, officers have confirmed.

One witness, who did not wish to give his name, described seeing police descend on the supermarket car park following the incident.

He said: “I was outside Tesco and saw about 40 youths.

“I went over and there was two men and a woman fighting.

“Next, the man pulled a knife and as the other man went to hit him the blade went straight through his hand.

“About for police cars and a riot van pulled up and he fled but they caught him and put him in the back of the van. He then proceeded to bang on the side of the van.

“It was something you wouldn’t expect in a small town like Hindley.” Witness Selina Heaton, 19, who witnessed a man with a knife on nearby Argyle Street earlier in the evening, added: “I just heard loads of banging on my street. I looked out the window and saw a man stabbing a van. “Next minute we heard another bang and looked outside my house he was stood there waving the knife about saying, ‘I’ve got a knife’ laughing! “The knife was massive.

“After that, we rang the police and they came.

“It was so scary there was nothing else I could do but ring the police.”

A spokesman for GMP said: “Police were called at around 8pm yesterday (15 November) to reports of a large scale disturbance at a supermarket on Cross Street in Hindley, Wigan. Officers attended and enquiries established that a man in his 30s had been stabbed in the hand. “A man, age 40, was arrested on suspicion of assault and he remains in custody for questioning. “Enquiries are ongoing.”
