Cops hurt as patrol cars collide – then hit house
TWO police cars crashed into each other before one hit a house, causing extensive damage.
The incident happened on Rydal Street in Leigh on Thursday night.
Two Peugeot 308 police cars collided with each other at the junction with Boughey Street before one of them hit the wall of a house.
A spokesperson for GMP said the vehicles had been responding to reports of a possible stolen vehicle in the area before the smash.
The house was left badly damaged but was made safe by emergency services.
Officers were treated at the scene, police said, though none had serious injuries.
The two wrecked police cars had significant damage.
Part of the street was taped off as residents said they heard a ‘large bang’ before the incident.
One eyewitness told the Manchester Evening News: “There are basically two police cars that look like write-offs.
“One looks like it has been hit and there’s another one behind it that has hit a house.
“Senior collision investigators have turned up. Firefighters are here, they are making the scene safe. “Several streets are cordoned off.” A GMP spokesperson said: “Officers had been responding to reports of a possible stolen vehicle in the area when the collision occurred at the junction of Rydal Street and Boughey Street.
“One of the police vehicles involved in the collision subsequently collided with the wall of a nearby property, causing extensive damage. This building was assessed and made safe.
“Officers were treated, however, none of the injuries are believed to be serious.”
Fire crews spent more than an hour at the scene.
